Printing Frozen Latitudes
Here in Lüdenscheid, Germany, the fine arts print company Seltmann Printart has started today with the print production of Frozen Latitudes. I’m here to sign-off the individual print sheets and fine tune the color settings.
We are printing on a Heidelberg Speedmaster printer which is filling a whole hall of the print production building. Colors stain the ground and allow for nice photos to remember the smells and the noise the machine makes.
Each print sheet is 100 x 70 cm and hosts 8 pages of the book. The 170g/m2 paper is Mango Satin, a FSC certified paper produced for fine art photo prints. After a sheet was printed 2000+ times, the aluminum sheets – one for each of the 4 CMYK colors – gets replaced by the next set of 8 pages, which is manual work by Thomas, the print expert who has to adjust them for optimal color synchronization. That is very much of handicraft work and requires a lot of experience and patience. I’m grateful for his skills and enjoy the 2 days at Seltmann Printart.
